The cost of free

A freebie may be free in monetary terms, but it can still cost time, personal data or future marketing contact. Assessing what you are giving in exchange — even if no money changes hands — helps you decide whether it is genuinely worthwhile. The most valuable freebies require minimal personal data and provide a clear, immediate benefit.

Is the product something you would actually use?

Claiming a freebie for a product you have no use for is rarely worth the effort, even if the process is quick. A sample of something you would genuinely consider buying is more valuable than a novelty item you will discard. Prioritising samples that relate to categories you already spend money on gives the best return on the time invested.

When to skip a freebie

If a freebie requires filling in a long form, completing multiple steps or providing more personal detail than the product is worth, skipping it is often the right call. Being selective means the freebies you do claim are more likely to be genuinely useful rather than clutter you have to deal with later.
