How to use loyalty cards without overspending
Loyalty schemes can save you real money, but only if you use them on spending you were already planning.

The risk of spending to earn
Loyalty schemes are designed to encourage repeat visits and higher basket sizes. Buying things you do not need specifically to earn points defeats the purpose of saving money. The goal is to collect points on purchases you were already going to make, not to create new reasons to spend.
Focus on your regular shops
The most straightforward way to use loyalty cards effectively is to scan them consistently at stores you already use. Over time, points accumulate from normal spending without requiring any change in behaviour. Personalised offers, which most major schemes now provide, can add further savings on specific items you already buy regularly.
Watch out for triggered offers
Some loyalty app offers require you to activate them before shopping, not after. Missing the activation step means missing the reward even if you bought the qualifying item. Setting aside five minutes before your weekly shop to check your app for activated offers is a reliable habit that prevents missing savings you would otherwise have qualified for.
