Small, consistent changes to how you shop can add up to significant savings on your weekly food bill.

Plan before you shop

A simple weekly meal plan stops you buying food you will not use. Write your shopping list based on the plan and stick to it as much as possible. Checking what is already in your cupboards, fridge and freezer before you leave prevents duplicating items you already have and reduces food waste.

Understand own-brand products

Supermarket own-brand products are often produced by the same manufacturers as branded versions, at a meaningfully lower price. Everyday items like pasta, tinned tomatoes, flour, cleaning products and over-the-counter medicines are usually safe swaps. Trying own-brand versions one category at a time makes the transition easy and lets you identify which switches work for your household.

Make loyalty schemes work for you

Most major UK supermarkets offer loyalty cards that provide personalised offers or Clubcard and Nectar prices on hundreds of lines. These can add up to meaningful savings over time, especially on items you buy regularly. Be careful not to spend more than you intended just to earn points — the saving should come first, and the points are a bonus.
